Literature Filtered for Clinical Relevance

Much of the biomedical literature is “researcher to researcher” communication.  Actually a relative small proportion of the literature is clinically specific.  In order to locate clinically focused information quickly, we recommend going directly to the authoritative sources of rigorously developed consensus of clinical expert professionals.

An excellent point to start is a search of the practice guidelines at the National Guidelines Clearinghouse maintained by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).  The National Guideline Clearinghouse™ (NGC) is a comprehensive database of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and related documents.  The mission of NGC is to provide clinicians an accessible mechanism for obtaining objective, detailed information on clinical practice guidelines.

Review of guidelines is useful and efficient for a busy clinician for three reasons:

1        First, an evidence-based literature review underpins them,

2        Second, they reflect current thinking as to “best-practices”, and

3        Third, it is a way to broaden practice perspectives beyond local and regional bias.
