Patient-as-Textbook
Sir William Osler's vision of the education of the clinician-the patient as the textbook- takes on new dimensions given the tools of 21st-century information and computation technologies. A century ago, Dr William Osler revolutionized medical education. He emphasized patient-centered teaching coupled with correlation to the most current scientific evidence. The electronic patient record on the one hand and the digital biomedical library on the other open a new and vast frontier and level for patient-centered learning. Patient-as-Textbook™ places continuing education at the point-of-care.

This is a totally different approach to continuing education designed for busy and motivated healthcare clinicians. Patient-as-Textbook™ presents accredited, self-managed, independent active learning activities designed for the improvement of clinical practice. The healthcare profession has seen a dramatic increase in biomedical information that now challenges the ability of physicians to retrieve and apply new information to daily clinical practice. Skills in searching for credible evidence to support practice decisions are demanded. The Patient-as-Textbook™ program provides a new resource to connect point-of-care patient evaluation and management tasks with the most current clinical information.

  • The right information
  • Targeted to the right patient
  • At the right time
  • At the right place
  • To support the right clinical care decision
Patient-as-Textbook™ focuses on presenting learning tools for today's clinical environment. Three introductory courses launch this continuing education service:

  • Continuous Quality Improvement Applied to Clinical Practice provides instruction and a framework that can be used repeatedly to improve practice
  • Point-of-Care Reflective Learning provides instruction to develop reflective learning skills and to apply these skills to the stream of questions that emerge in the course of daily clinical practice
  • Critical Appraisal of Biomedical Information develops active skills in the reading and assessment of biomedical information
The perspective of medicine as primary patient care and as information management is stressed in all courses and the development of related skills are a vital element of the learning experience.
